RUDA Flood Protection Project Update 2026: Saving Lahore & Sheikhupura via River Ravi

The Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) has reached a critical milestone in its mission to protect the residents of Lahore and Sheikhupura from the devastating effects of seasonal flooding. By accelerating the construction of a massive 46-kilometer-long flood protection embankment system along the River Ravi, the authority is ensuring a safer environment for millions of citizens.

This initiative is a core component of the Ravi Riverfront Urban Development Project. The primary objective is to channelize the River Ravi, transforming it into a managed 1-kilometer wide corridor. This strategic engineering feat ensures that even during peak flood seasons, the water remains contained within the designated path, preventing overflow into adjacent urban areas.

Phase 1 of the project is already showing significant progress, with a 3-kilometer stretch near Hudiara Maraka successfully completed. The overall plan involves constructing 20-foot-high embankments stretching from the Ravi Syphon down to the Hudiara Drain. Following the anxieties caused by the 2025 floods, RUDA has intensified its efforts under the direct instructions of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz to meet a completion deadline for the preliminary bund by June 30th.

This project is not merely about disaster management; it is a foundation for future urban development. By stabilizing the river banks, RUDA is unlocking the potential for sustainable growth and modern infrastructure along the riverfront, making it one of the most significant civil engineering projects in Pakistan’s history.

راوی اربن ڈویلپمنٹ اتھارٹی (RUDA) لاہور اور شیخوپورہ کی لاکھوں کی آبادی کو سیلاب کے خطرات سے بچانے کے لیے دن رات کوشاں ہے۔ اس عظیم الشان منصوبے کے تحت دریائے راوی کے دونوں کناروں پر 46 کلومیٹر طویل حفاظتی پشتے تعمیر کیے جا رہے ہیں تاکہ سیلابی پانی کو منظم طریقے سے گزارا جا سکے۔

یہ منصوبہ راوی ریور فرنٹ اربن ڈویلپمنٹ پراجیکٹ کا ایک اہم حصہ ہے جس کا مقصد دریا کو چینلائز کرنا ہے۔ اس حکمت عملی کے تحت دریا کے لیے ایک کلومیٹر چوڑا کوریڈور مختص کیا گیا ہے، جس سے سیلاب کی صورت میں پانی آبادیوں میں داخل ہونے کے بجائے اپنے مقررہ راستے پر رہے گا۔ اتھارٹی کے مطابق 20 فٹ بلند حفاظتی بند کی تعمیر کا کام تیزی سے جاری ہے اور ابتدائی مرحلہ 30 جون تک مکمل کر لیا جائے گا۔

وزیراعلیٰ پنجاب مریم نواز کی خصوصی ہدایات پر اس منصوبے کی رفتار کو مزید تیز کر دیا گیا ہے۔ یہ منصوبہ نہ صرف سیلاب سے تحفظ فراہم کرے گا بلکہ مستقبل کی شہری ترقی اور جدید انفراسٹرکچر کے لیے بھی سنگ میل ثابت ہوگا۔
